All these motifs are skillfully chased in varicoloured gold, produced by the addition of another metal.  While copper and silver produce respectively red or green gold, other shades are created by varying the composition of the alloy. \r\n\r\nFrançois-Guillaume Tiron became a master goldsmith in 1747 and two years later went into business with his brother Jean-Marie, trading as Tiron Frères until around 1756. His trade card (now in the collection of  Waddesdon manor) indicates that he sold jewellery, snuffboxes, étuis, cane handles and everything from corkscrews to chains. In 1775, Tiron organised a sale of his stock which included 'all sorts of boxes in transparent enamel, in painted enamel and in coloured gold' as well as some Meissen porcelain items, which would have been unusual in the stock of a goldsmith. \r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world’s great decorative art collections, including silver,  mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes.  Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"An oval, varicoloured-gold snuffbox.
