The figures of the putti surrounding Apollo are taken from an as yet unknown source. The sides of the box are enamelled with the emblems of the Arts and Sciences. Designs for gold boxes were often inspired by well known paintings or collections of engravings. \r\n\r\nJean-François Breton or Lebreton was apprenticed at 14 to Etienne Pollet. In 1772, he became prime warden of the Paris goldsmiths guild.\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world’s great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Rectangular jewelled and enamelled gold snuff box with Apollo on the cover flanked by three putti amid clouds and a sunburst of diamonds.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Breton, Jean-François","id":"A22336"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"diamond","id":"AAT11084"},{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT14910"}],"techniques":[{"text":"engraving (incising)","id":"AAT53829"},{"text":"setting","id":"x42734"},{"text":"enamelling","id":"AAT53773"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Engraved, jewelled and enamelled gold","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2008BW4017","2008BV4088","2008BV4087","2008BV4086","2008BV4085","2008BV4071","2008BV4070","2024NX5784","2024PB3364"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"71","id":"THES49723"},"free":"","case":"CA011","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"snuffbox","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"marked","id":"x32454"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1753-1754","earliest":"1753-01-01","latest":"1754-12-31"},"association":{"text":"marked","id":"x32454"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"8.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"6.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 29/01/24 IW","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Provenance: Baron Carl von Rothschild, Frankfurt.
