The design and decoration of the box was likely inspired by Swiss examples. The watch was made by London chronometer maker Anthony Mesure (or Measure) around 1800. \r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"An oval, jewelled, enamelled gold combined snuffbox and watch, the box painted in translucent blue, the cover bordered with split pearls.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Strachan, Alexander James","id":"A5409"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":"box"},{"name":{"text":"Mesure, Anthony","id":"A22444"},"association":{"text":"watchmaker","id":"x37543"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT14910"},{"text":"pearl","id":"AAT11827"}],"techniques":[{"text":"enamelling","id":"AAT53773"},{"text":"engine turning","id":"AAT233401"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Enamelled engine-turned gold and pearls","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Clocks & Watches","id":"THES48976"},{"text":"Enamels","id":"THES48876"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2008BU2159","2008BU2690","2008BU2689","2008BU2688","2008BU2420"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"022","id":"THES404611"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"snuffbox","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"box"},{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"watch"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1800","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"8.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"5.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"3.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Mark of Alexander James Strachan, goldsmith registered in London, September 21, 1799-between 1842 and 1850","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"In the base"},{"content":"English standard mark, a crown, for gold used from 1798 onward for 18 carat and 1844 onward for 18 and 22 carat","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"In the base and on the right side of the bezel"},{"content":"English standard mark '18' for 18 carat gold, 1798-1974","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"In the base and on the right side of the bezel"},{"content":"London assay office mark, a leopard's head crowned, 1756-1821","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"In the base"},{"content":"London date letter 'E', May 29, 1800-May 28, 1801","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"In the base"},{"content":"English duty mark for gold, England, 1798-1821","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"In the base"},{"content":"Engraved 'Anth.
