It involves gilding the back of a glass panel and engraving the gold with a decorative design. The reverse of the glass is then painted and the panels applied to the box over gold or silver foil. \r\n\r\nThese panels are similar to a set signed by Villar on a box of the same date. They show scenes from the history of Rome and in the corners, allegorical figures representing the four rivers of the Roman Empire. On the cover, the family of the Roman general Coriolanus beseech him to call off his attack on the city. The designs are taken from engravings by Jean-Guillaume Moitte.\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world’s great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Rectangular, gold-mounted <i>verre églomisé</i> snuffbox with canted corners set with ten panels of glass gilded on the reverse and painted in red with scenes from the history of Rome.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Blerzy, Joseph-Etienne","id":"A14796"},"association":{"text":"box maker","id":"x40982"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Villar","id":"A25875"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":"panels"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"},{"text":"silver foil","id":"x32609"}],"techniques":[{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"},{"text":"verre églomisé","id":"AAT53833"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold and <i>verre églomisé</i> (glass painted to resemble enamel), silver foil backing","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"},{"text":"Myths & Legends","id":"THES49005"}],"styles":[{"text":"Neo-classicism","id":"x38958"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2008BU2184","2008BU2271","2008BU2270","2008BU2269","2008BU2268","2008BU2267","2008BU2266"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"71","id":"THES49723"},"free":"","case":"CA009","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"snuffbox","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1789-1796","earliest":"1789-01-01","latest":"1796-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"10.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"5.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"3.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 29/01/24 IW","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Mark of Joseph-Etienne Blerzy","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"In the lid, in the base, and in the left wall"},{"content":"Paris marks ca. 1789-1796","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"In the lid, in the base, and in the left wall"}],"objectHistory":"Provenance: Félix Doisteau, 1928.
