This example, if it was made in 1794-5, is very unusual. There is no other known piece of substantial silver bearing the mark of Elizabeth Bland and her son James. Clues might be in the coat of arms applied later. One side bears the arms of Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex (1773-1843), third son of King George III, whose remarkable collection of silver was sold after his death. This was one of the most important lots, described as 'a magnificent cistern, embossed with festoons and foliage, with lions, masks and handles, supported upon lions' legs'. \n\nThe cistern was acquired by Lieutenant Colonel George Hussey-Packe (1796-1874), chairman of the Great Northern Railway, who applied his own coat of arms in 1848, on the other side. It is likely that the 1794 hallmarks were added from another piece, when one of the coat of arms was applied. This sort of 'embellishment' was often found as the secondhand market for silver developed in the 19th century. \n\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes.
