The wolf raised them until they were found by the shepherd Faustulus. It has been set into the clasp of a wide bracelet made of woven hair. Wide bracelets, often several worn together on one wrist, became fashionable in the 1820s.\r\n\r\nThe term 'micromosaic' is used to describe mosaics made of the smallest glass pieces. Some micromosaics contain more than 5000 pieces per square inch. The earliest attempts at micromosaic revealed visible joins between the pieces (known as <i>tesserae</i>) and a lack of perspective. Later artists such as Antonio Aguatti made huge advances in micromosaic technique, resulting in renderings that were truer to life. Glass micromosaic technique developed in the 18th century, in the Vatican Mosaic Workshop in Rome, where they still undertake restoration work today. \r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"A chased gold clasp inset with an eight-sided mosaic depicting Romulus and Remus with the wolf in a malachite surround, affixed to a band of woven hair.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"malachite","id":"AAT11123"},{"text":"mosaic glass","id":"AAT260731"},{"text":"hair","id":"AAT11814"}],"techniques":[{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"},{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"},{"text":"micromosaic","id":"x42499"},{"text":"weaving","id":"AAT53642"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Chased gold, carved malachite and micromosaic with a band of woven hair","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2008BW3456","2008BW3457","2018KR7871","2018KR7874","2018KR7881"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"028","id":"THES404613"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"bracelet","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Rome","id":"x29106"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1820-50","earliest":"1820-01-01","latest":"1850-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"18.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Entire length including strap","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"3.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Strap","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"3.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Micromosaic plaque","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"4.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Micromosaic plaque","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"5.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Plaque surround","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"6.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Plaque surround","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"1.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Plaque surround","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Provenance: M.
