This pair was part of a set of seven made for the Courtenay family of Powderham Castle, Devon. The set is now dispersed in public and private collections. Only four in this set, including this waiter and Loan:Gilbert.592-2008, have decorated rims. This is puzzling as sets were usually made to be identical.\n\r\nRecent provenance research has shown that Henry Fetherstonhaugh (1754–1846) of Uppark House, Sussex bought the four decorated waiters from the goldsmith Edward Farrell. Farrell catered to the 1820s vogue for historic fashions and styles. He often produced new pieces of silver based on earlier designs or, as with these waiters, embellished antique silver.\n \r\nThe design for the waiters’ rims are based on an etching of an ornamental acanthus frieze by Stefano della Bella (1610-1664), c.1650 (V&A Museum no. 28190:9).\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"Silver-gilt dish of hexagonal form on six paw feet with a moulded foliate border. It is chased around the rim with a frieze of putti and hounds with scrolling acanthus leaves on a matted ground. The centre of the dish is engraved with the arms of Courtenay, probably for William Courtenay (1628-1702) of Powderham Castle, Devon.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Pyne, Benjamin","id":"A8762"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":"Waiters"},{"name":{"text":"Farrell, Edward","id":"A6002"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":"Later rim decoration "}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"silver-gilt","id":"x37998"}],"techniques":[{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"},{"text":"raising","id":"AAT237068"},{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"},{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"},{"text":"engraving (incising)","id":"AAT53829"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver-gilt, raised, cast, chased, engraved","categories":[{"text":"Tableware and cutlery","id":"THES48888"},{"text":"Food vessels and tableware","id":"THES48952"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2009CC6253","2009CC6255"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"71A","id":"THES413997"},"free":"","case":"CA005","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"waiter","id":"AAT238451"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"assayed","id":"x42656"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1698-1699","earliest":"1698-01-01","latest":"1699-12-31"},"association":{"text":"hallmarked","id":"x32454"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1823-25","earliest":"1823-01-01","latest":"1825-12-31"},"association":{"text":"decorated","id":"AAT56257"},"note":"Edward Farrell was supplying Harry Fetherstonhaugh with 17th century style silver for display on his Dining Room buffet at Uppark in 1823-5"}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"LOAN:GILBERT.592-2008","id":"O156381"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Weight","value":"737","unit":"g","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"25","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"3.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"22","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 20/12/23 IW","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Provenance: Probably Sir William Courtenay, Bart., Powderham Castle, Devon.
