The gilded cup is applied with an openwork silver sleeve, embossed with cartouches of St Christopher, St Andrew and the Annunciation. The striking decoration and part gilding suggests that this cup was intended for display.\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world’s great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"A silver-gilt beaker covered by a silver sleeve that is embossed with three cartouches depicting St Christopher, St Andrew, and the Visitation. The beaker has a very small splayed foot and a slightly splaying lip. The cartouches are set within a pierced and chased web of floral, foliate and scroll decoration. Winged cherub faces are at the bottom of each cartouche. A row of beading delineates the end of the decoration before the lip.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":"A mark FW over P in a heart shaped shield may represent the Master's mark for Torun represented by .T. in a circle.
