Those manning the numerous ships, barges and tugs on the river are still known as Thames Watermen. The British monarch was no exception and travelled on the Thames between royal palaces and on state occasions. The royal barges were rowed by the Royal Watermen, a select group chosen from the Thames Watermen. Even today, 24 Royal Waterman perform ceremonial functions. They still wear two partly gilded silver badges which are sewn onto the chest of their bright red liveries, the crown on top of the Royal Coat-of-arms.\n\nThis set of watermen's badges is part of the Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection, on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum. Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert transferred his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996, and it has been on loan to the V&A since 2008","physicalDescription":"The badge is embossed with the Horse of hanover, Tudor Rose, and Stuarts Thistle of Scotland over the royal motto, DIEU ET MON DROIT.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Garthorne, Francis","id":"A14772"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"parcel gilding","id":"AAT233409"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver, parcel-gilt","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2011EW5888","2011EW5889"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"023","id":"THES404901"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"badge","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1720","earliest":"1715-01-01","latest":"1724-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"LOAN:GILBERT.596:1-2008","id":"O157628"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"LOAN:GILBERT.596:2-2008","id":"O157628"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"17.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"04/10/2013","earliest":"2013-10-04","latest":"2013-10-04"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"16.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"04/10/2013","earliest":"2013-10-04","latest":"2013-10-04"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"2.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"04/10/2013","earliest":"2013-10-04","latest":"2013-10-04"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This set of waterman’s badges is particularly interesting because crown and armorial were created for two different royal dynasties: the marks visible at the of the crown show that it was assessed at London’ Goldsmith Hall in 1685, during the reign of Charles II, who died on 6 February 1685, or his successor James II (James VII of Scotland). Both were members of the House of Stuart. \r\nThe royal armorial in contrast is that of the Hanoverians. George I was the first Hanoverian on the British throne and succeeded Queen Anne in 1714. \r\n\r\nProvenance\r\nAcquired by Arthur Gilbert from S.J.
