He was the first Keeper of the Royal Academy. \r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.","physicalDescription":"An oval varicoloured-gold snuffbox, the cover chased with a circular medallion depicting Love overcoming Strength, bordered by a wreath of laurel, the spandrels of the cover and the base and walls chased with rosettes on a diaper ground within borders of interlaced ribbons and flowers.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Barbot, Paul","id":"A22312"},"association":{"text":"box maker","id":"x40982"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Moser, George Michael","id":"A8677"},"association":{"text":"chaser","id":"x39828"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"}],"techniques":[{"text":"raising","id":"AAT237068"},{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Varicoloured gold, chased","categories":[{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2008BU1910","2008BU1905","2008BU1904","2008BU1882","2008BU1881","2008BU1880","2008BU1879","2008BU1878","2008BU1877"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"71","id":"THES49723"},"free":"","case":"CA008","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"snuffbox","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1774-1775","earliest":"1774-05-29","latest":"1775-05-28"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Depth","value":"3.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"7.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"5.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured 29/01/24 IW","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"lion passant, leopard's head crowned, T","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"London hallmarks for 1774-75 struck on the left side of the bezel"},{"content":"PB","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Mark of Paul Barbot struck on the left side of the bezel"}],"objectHistory":"Provenance: Hannah Gubbay; Barbara Woolworth Hutton; sale, Sotheby's, London, lot 36, 24 March 1980.
