European designers adopted elements of Chinese design to create their own fantastical version of the style, often combined with  asymmetrical, organic rococo motifs. \r\n\r\nJean-Baptiste Devos, the goldsmith responsible for this box, worked in Paris between about 1718 and 1766 and was in the forefront of French taste.\r\n\r\nSir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world’s great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes.
