Upholstered in quilted red woollen fabric, possibly originally glazed. This is quilted in compartments, with joints along the folds and applique of cord along the join lines. The edges are corded and where the cord has pulled away brass nails, with swelled heads are visible. These are unlike any English naliks or tacks. The well and seat area is now covered with oil cloth (19c?) printed or painted with a caning design. This is also on the driver's footboard, but where this has pulled away a plain printed trellis on a much larger scale is visible. The driver's seat is similarly covered in red cloth. It is fringed around the edge and the fringing appears to date from the 1860's. The frontiespiece of the sleigh is carved with a draped woman riding on a lion.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pine","id":"AAT12620"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"carved pine","categories":[{"text":"Transport","id":"THES48881"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2014HB8369"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"MAID (LOAN)","id":"THES50042"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES342827"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES342827"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES302514"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES302514"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES302513"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES302515"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sledge","id":""}],[{"text":"Shaft","id":""}],[{"text":"Shaft","id":""}],[{"text":"Head-stall","id":""}],[{"text":"Head-stall part","id":""}],[{"text":"Head-stall","id":""}],[{"text":"Head-stall part","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Holland","id":"x29020"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1750-1755","earliest":"1750-01-01","latest":"1755-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Sir Julian Goldsmid, Bart","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"208.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"99.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"134.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"53.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"head-stalls","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Sledge, carved, painted and gilt; floral scroll work, with a lion and a child at the peak.
