He played an important role in the rejuvenation of Paris fashion. He left Balenciaga, with whom he had worked for six years, to join Courrèges in 1964. When this partnership failed, he began to design, independently showing his first collection in 1965. Like Courrèges, Ungaro sculpted hard-edged clothes in heavy worsted fabrics and triple gaberdines. His garments retained the angular shapes of the mid 1960s fashions so perfectly that they often almost stood up by themselves.\r\n\r\nThis day dress and jacket was worn by Mrs Brenda Azario. It was featured in French <i>Vogue</i> (March 1966 and March 1967).","physicalDescription":"Jacket and dress made of striped wool gabardine.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Emanuel Ungaro","id":"A2426"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Nattier","id":"A20083"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":"fabric"}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wool gabardine with zip and hooks and eyes","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AV6244","2013GA4470"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES308071"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES308071"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Jacket","id":""}],[{"text":"Dress","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1966","earliest":"1966-01-01","latest":"1966-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs Brenda Azario","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"Approx. dress size 10","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Jacket and dress in wool gabardine, designed by Emanuel Ungaro, Paris, France, 1966","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Spring 1966","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.320-1978","T.320A-1978"],"accessionNumberNum":"320","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1978,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Jacket","Dress"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-03-13","recordCreationDate":"1999-12-15","availableToBook":true}}
