Contemporary artist Zoltron created this gig serigraph for Pussy Riot ahead of Pussy Riot's planned show at UC Berkeley on 14 March 2020. Two days before the planned gig, the state of California mandated closure - Zoltron added the \"POSTPONED\" banner and the serigraph became a timestamp for the pandemic.\n\nPussy Riot is a Russian protest punk rock and performance group, with themes including feminism, LGBT rights, opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin and his policies, and the Russian Orthodox Church. In 2012 three of the group's members, Nadya Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich, were convicted of sacreligious hooliganism after a guerilla performance in Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and sentenced to two years' imprisonment. \n\nThis serigraph features Nadya wearing a face mask instead of her iconic Pussy Riot neon balaclava, posed as \"Our Sacred Lady of Dissent\". In the background, Zoltron pays tribute to other Riot Grrrl, punk rock and politically motivated women, including Bikini Kill, Blondie, Siouxie Sioux, Patti Smith, Aretha Franklin and Greta Thunburg amongst others. This edition is signed by Nadya and Zoltron.","physicalDescription":"Serigraph advertising Pussy Riot, with \"Postponed\" banner, Zoltron, 2020. The second, across the botom of the serigraph, reads \"A patriot must always be ready to defend her country against her government\".\n\nThe second \"O\" in the \"Postponed\" banner is stylised as a person's face wearing a face mask.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Zoltron","id":"AUTH360234"},"association":{"text":"designers","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"serigraph","id":"x35560"},{"text":"screenprint","id":"x36290"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Screenprint","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Music","id":"THES253065"},{"text":"Musicians","id":"THES277525"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2021MX1505","2021MX1506"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"009","id":"THES345269"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"009","id":"THES345269"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"banners","id":"AAT195679"}],[{"text":"banners","id":"AAT195679"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United States","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2020","earliest":"2020-01-01","latest":"2020-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Zoltron","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"60.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"serigraph","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"45.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Serigraph","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"6.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"banner","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"30.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"banner","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Serigraph advertising Pussy Riot, with \"Postponed\" banner, Zoltron, 2020","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["S.179:1-2021","S.179:2-2021"],"accessionNumberNum":"179","accessionNumberPrefix":"S","accessionYear":2021,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-09","recordCreationDate":"2020-12-09","availableToBook":true}}
