These novelty collectibles were made from the mid nineteenth century onwards and often took the form of pencils, sewing accessories and tobacco pipes. The lens was usually located in the handle of a souvenir object, and looked like a small glass “bead”. To see the image, you would hold the lens up to your eye and focus on a light source. Stanhopes were one of the earliest forms of pictorial souvenir (even pre-dating the postcard) and often contained pictures of holiday resorts. Other popular images were portraits of famous people, religious imagery or risqué photographs.\r\n\r\nThis Stanhope from the 1860s is set in ivory and contains a tape measure for use in sewing.
