Yolanda Sonnabend's designs had to reflect his concept, which was a Westerner's distillation of Japanese martial arts, a Bunraku puppet episode and a scene of childbirth. The designs had to suggest Japan without being a slavish depiction. In this design for one of the women, the Japanese features are hinted at in the make-up, but the dress is less specifically of time or place. \r\nThe designer has used collage technique, overlaying two different pieces of wallpaper and then tearing away the top layer, but being very clear about the blue panel and the red shoulder strap and red edging to the skirt panel. \r\nThe interpretation of the costume, how slavishly the patterns have to be followed and the way in which the outer lines are realised (they may just be an indication of how the costume looks in movement) would be determined by the maker and the designer in consultation.","physicalDescription":"Costume design for a woman in Kenneth MacMillan's ballet <i>Rituals</i>, Royal Ballet, 1975. Full length female figure facing front, the left arm angled upwards at elbow and hand, the right arm outstretched; she stands on pointe on the left leg with the right bent to calf. The hair is flat to the head and the facial features are reduced to eyes and a few touches of red and black. The dress is strapless and above the knee, the skirt cut in a severe 'pyramid' on sides and hem; it is made of two layers of contrasting wallpaper, the top layer ripped away on the left hand side; to the right is a torn panel filled in with blue crayon edged with a red line. On the right shoulder is a red strap and following the lines of the skirt are blue and black lines.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Sonnabend, Yolanda","id":"A10286"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"charcoal","id":"AAT12862"},{"text":"crayon","id":"x30605"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"},{"text":"collage","id":"AAT138699"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Charcoal, crayon, wallpaper on paper","categories":[{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2008BV5032","2012FG5329"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"009","id":"THES356713"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"costume design","id":"AAT163423"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1975","earliest":"1975-01-01","latest":"1975-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"410","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"275","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"lower edge","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"irregular right hand side","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Rituals","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"pen and ink, lower left hand corner; fading"},{"content":"Y Sonnabend","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"pen and ink lower right hand corner; fading"}],"objectHistory":"The design for a Woman was created by Yolanda Sonnabend for Kenneth MacMillan's ballet Rituals, premiered by The Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House in 1975.
