Zavatta and menagerie, ca.2010","type":"generic title"}],"summaryDescription":"This poster advertises the French touring circus, Cirque H. Zavatta, and its menagerie. The poster gives no venues, dates or times: details can be overposted as required. Cirque H. Zavatta was touring in France as recently as 2019 with its show La Piste aux Etoiles.\n\nMany circus families have long heritages, and the Zavatta family can trace its circus roots to 1844, when the Italian Giovanni Antonio Zavatta (1822-1940) established the Circo Zavaretta. Henri Zavatta, the proprietor of the circus advertised on this poster, is the great great grandson of Giovanni Zavatta and his wife, Anna Bougonis. Of all their numerous grandchildren, Achille Zavoretta (1915-1993), son of Frederico Zavatta, was the most celebrated circus performer and proprietor. He established the Cirque Zavatta in 1978, and was Henri's grandfather.\n\nMany circuses worldwide continue the tradition of including animals in their shows, and offering visits to their menageries. In 2011 the Cirque H. Zavatta advertised: 'Pour finir, quatre alpagas, un zébre, un wapiti et deux chevaux attendaient les visiteurs dans la petite ménagerie' - showing four alpacas, a zebra, an elk and two horses'- but not the big cats illustrated here.\n\n","physicalDescription":"Colour poster advertising Cirque H.
