They are made of tow (hemp) with wax heads, hands and feet. They were probably made in France, as they are labelled in French, but some of the orders represented were only active in Germany and the Netherlands.\r\n\r\nThis figure represents a Minimite nun. The Order of the Minims was founded in Italy in the 1430s by St. Francis of Paola (1416-1507). The order was known for extreme humility and austerity. The Minim nuns wear a simple black habit with wide sleeves, a black scapula, and a white wimple and black veil.
