They are made of tow (hemp) with wax heads, hands and feet. They were probably made in France, as they are labelled in French, but some of the orders represented were only active in Germany and the Netherlands.\r\n\r\nThis figure represents a Franciscan Récollet friar. The Récollets were a French branch of the Franciscan order created following reform movements in the fifteenth century, and established in France from the late sixteenth century onwards. Récollets were suppressed during the French Revolution, although a separate German-Belgian branch known as the Recollects survived. In 1897, Pope Leo XIII formally reunited the Franciscan reform branches, recreating a single undivided Order of Friars Minor.
