His photographs are held in numerous public collections including the National Portrait Gallery, Tate, Archive of Modern Conflict, The Photographers’ Gallery and the V&A. \r\n\r\nHis images are often concerned with the details of overlooked and discarded places or objects, previously with a focus on London’s East End. He often works in series, exploring a working technique and subject in parallel. Alongside working on his photographic series, Gill has been at the forefront of the recent rise in self-publishing, creating innovative and beautifully designed photography books and portfolios. \n\r\nThis limited-edition box brings together images from Gill's recent series Night Procession, the artist's first body of work to be made since his move to rural south Sweden in 2014 and which took him over three years to complete. Intrigued by the local wildlife, he placed cameras with motion sensors in trees to capture the forest at night. He soon began to try to anticipate where the animals might appear: a suitable perch for an owl or the best drinking spot for a deer, rearranging his cameras accordingly. A desire to find ways for the subject to influence the final picture has been a recurring theme throughout his work. With this series, Gill talks about how the flora and fauna of the forest would ‘orchestrate and perform and take on the role of author’. Having experimented throughout his practice with the idea of ‘stepping back as the author of images’ each photograph throughout his oeuvre lives as a collaboration between both the physical space and the finished image itself. Here, the artist captures nature at night, presenting a stunning performance of a world lived parallel to our own. The eight images were selected by the artist and printed in collotype by master printer Osamu Yamamoto during his residency at Benrido Atelier, Kyoto, as the Grand Prize Winner of the Hariban Award 2017.\r\n\r\nGill used plant pigments from the surrounding areas to make the master prints from which these collotypes are derived. As part of this purchase, the artist has offered to donate an original plant pigment print.\r\n","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Stephen Gill","id":"C4134"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"x43821"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Collotype print","categories":[{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"},{"text":"Animals and Wildlife","id":"THES250852"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"X","shelf":"1041","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Photograph","id":"AAT46300"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2017","earliest":"2017-01-01","latest":"2017-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"51","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"40","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Edition of 12 plus 2 artist’s proofs","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Photograph from the series 'Night Procession', 2017 by Stephen Gill","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["PH.368-2021"],"accessionNumberNum":"368","accessionNumberPrefix":"PH","accessionYear":2021,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-07-31","recordCreationDate":"2020-11-17","availableToBook":false}}
