This relief, representing the Virgin and Child, is in the style of Desiderio da Settignano (1428-1464). This popular composition is recorded in a number of reliefs in pigmented stucco and in paintings from the workshop of Neri di Bicci (1419-1491). The relationship between the marble and the stuccos is problematic. The measurements of an example in the museum in Berlin-Dahlem agree closely enough to this relief to suggest that the stucco is a squeeze (or cast) from it.\nDesiderio da Settignano, (Desiderio de Bartolomeo di Francesco detto Ferro (c. 1428 or 1430 – 1464) was an Italian sculptor active during the Renaissance. He came from a family of stone carvers and stonemasons. His work is influenced by Donatello, but very likley he was trained in the large Florentine workshop run by Bernardo and Antonio Rossellino.\r\n","physicalDescription":"Relief in purple-veined white marble. The Virgin is represented seated in half-length turned to the right. Her head is in three-quarter face, and her hands are clasped in prayer. Her robe is decorated on the wrists and chest with embroidered putti, and at the neck with a foliated design. The cloak has a foliated border. The Child, seated in left profile on a tasselled cushion on the right of the relief, places his left hand on the Virgin's wrist and with his right holds up her veil. The figures are set against a background of cloudy sky. At the upper corners are two winged cherub heads. The relief is recessed inside a moulded frame.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":"in the style of Desiderio da Settignano"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"marble","id":"AAT11443"},{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"}],"techniques":[{"text":"low relief","id":"AAT53623"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Purple-veined white marble panel in wooden frame with figures sculptured in low relief","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Reliefs","id":"THES49035"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2024NW7095","2024NW7094","2024NW7093","2024NW7097","2024NW7096","2024NW7106","2024NW7107","2024NW7109","2024NW7108","2024NW7105","2024NW7104","2024NW7103","2024NW7102","2024NW7101","2024NW7100","2024NW7099","2024NW7098","2012FM5666","2017KB7646","2017JT6820","2017KC9833","2017KN2435"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES360685"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Relief","id":""}],[{"text":"Panel","id":"x47676"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"third quarter 15th century","earliest":"1450-01-01","latest":"1475-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"41.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"34.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bought in 1866.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Panel relief, marble in wooden frame, the Virgin and Child, in the style of Desiderio da Settignano, Florentine, third quarter of the 15th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Staatliche. <u>Der Madonna ganz nah: Reliefs und Gemälde der Florentiner Renaissance</u>.
