The obverse of this medal represents bust of Domenico Fontana (1543-1607) and the reverse shows the obelisk.\nFontana was a Swiss engineer of the late Renaissance, working primarily in Italy. He built the 'Cappella del Presepio' in the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, and nearby the Palazzo Montalto. He made the alterations in the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano (c. 1586) and designed fountains with his brother Giovanni, e.g. the Fontana dell'Acqua Paola, or the Fontana di Termini. In 1586 he erected the 327 ton obelisk in the Square of St. Peter's, which was an enormous constructional and labour intense undertaking. He gives an account of it in <i>Della transportatione dell'obelisco Vaticano e delle fabriche di Sisto V</i> (Rome, 1590). He also erected three other ancient obelisks on the Piazza del Popolo, Piazza di S. Maria Maggiore, and Piazza di S. Giovanni in Laterano.\nPoggini (1520-1590) was a sculptor, medallist, die-engraver, goldsmith, bronze-caster and poet. His earliest training probably came from his father Michele. \r\nDomenico worked mostly with his brother Giampaolo until the latter’s departure between 1553 and 1555 to work for Philip II, King of Spain, in the Netherlands and Spain.\r\nHe also practised as a marble sculptor, executing a figure of Apollo in the Boboli Gardens (1559) and a bust of Francesco I de'Medici (1564), by whom he was employed on a bronze figure for the Studiolo of the Palazzo Vecchio.\r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Poggini, Domenico","id":"A22566"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze","categories":[{"text":"Coins & Medals","id":"THES48974"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES395749"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Medal","id":"AAT46025"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1586","earliest":"1586-01-01","latest":"1586-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"1.5","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"There is an electrotype copy of this medal (inv. no. 1857-127).","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Medal, bronze, bust of Domenico Fontana with legend, by Domenico Poggini, Italian (Florence), 1586","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Inventory of Art Objects acquired in the Year 1865. <font -u>Inventory of the Objects in the Art Division of the Museum at South Kensington, arranged According to the Dates of their Acquisition.
