Of this brooch he has written 'The main theme is goldfinches on thistledown but amongst these are supporting cast namely: two mice, two snails, ragwort flowers with yellow/black caterpillars of the cinnabar moth (several of these), mushrooms, an adder and (of course) a mole looking out from the earth.' The mole has particular significance for Preston who often refers to himself as 'Mole' or 'Red Mole'.","physicalDescription":"Brooch of coloured golds with rubies, in the form of birds and animals in foliage, set within a classical structure on wheels.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Preston, Paul","id":"A22142"},"association":{"text":"designer and maker","id":"x34662"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"ruby","id":"AAT11082"}],"techniques":[{"text":"stone setting","id":"x34787"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold, set with rubies","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2015HW1882","2015HW1879","2015HW1881","2015HW1880","2015HW1883","2015HW1884"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91","id":"THES49703"},"free":"","case":"46","shelf":"A","box":"6"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"brooch","id":"AAT45995"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Wales","id":"x29337"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2007","earliest":"2007-01-01","latest":"2007-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given to honour the life of Valerie Stewart and her career at the Oxford Gallery","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"5.91","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"5.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"2.43","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'A CHARM OF GOLDFINCHES NOV. 2007'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"'FOR VALERY'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'A Charm of Goldfinches' brooch, gold set with rubies, designed and made by Paul Preston (born 1943), made in Wales, 2007","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"birds","id":"x35043"},{"text":"animals","id":"x30274"},{"text":"foliage","id":"AAT11892"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.20-2008"],"accessionNumberNum":"20","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":2008,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-09","recordCreationDate":"2008-05-08","availableToBook":false}}
