His family has worked as woodworkers since the Edo period (1615–1868). It was his grandfather, the first-generation Jihei, who chose to go beyond the traditional family business to achieve perfection in finished products by overseeing every aspect of production, from selecting the wood to the final application of urushi. An encounter with the multi-talented artistic genius, Kitaōji Rosanjin (1883–1959), further inspired him to establish a one-man production style. Rosanjin supported him with guidance and patronage.\r\n\r\nBorn in Tokyo in 1957, Jihei III graduated from the Sculpture Department of Tokyo Zōkei University in 1980 and joined the family business that same year. In 2001, he inherited the name Jihei III and the position of seventh-generation woodworker. His works seamlessly marry traditional woodworking and urushi techniques with contemporary forms, created through a sculptural approach. Following his grandfather's path, he is closely connected to the tea ceremony. In 1980, the same year he joined the family business, he started studying the art of tea-making under Suzuki Sōkan (1924–2016), a Master of the Urasenke School of Tea. He curated an exhibition titled The New Look of Tea at the Embassy of Japan in London from 20 November 2019 to 10 January 2020. The selection of tea utensils, crafted in a wide range of media by fellow Japanese contemporary artists and displayed alongside Jihei III's own works, embodied his philosophy of modern tea drinking.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Murase Jihei III","id":"AUTH359199"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Wood","id":"AAT11914"},{"text":"Lacquer","id":"AAT14916"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Lacquerware","id":"THES49004"},{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2020MT9820"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"45","id":"THES49801"},"free":"","case":"12","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"45","id":"THES49801"},"free":"","case":"12","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"LAYDOWN","id":"THES394915"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tea container","id":""}],[{"text":"Lid","id":""}],[{"text":"Storage box","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Tokyo (city)","id":"x32430"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2019","earliest":"2019-01-01","latest":"2019-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Ippodo Gallery","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"8.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"21/10/2020","earliest":"2020-10-21","latest":"2020-10-21"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"7.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"21/10/2020","earliest":"2020-10-21","latest":"2020-10-21"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"6.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"21/10/2020","earliest":"2020-10-21","latest":"2020-10-21"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Silver lacquer tea container, 2019, by Jihei Murase III (b.1957), Tokyo, Japan, modern studio crafts; with a signed wooden storage box","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["FE.264:1-2020","FE.264:2-2020","FE.264:3-2020"],"accessionNumberNum":"264","accessionNumberPrefix":"FE","accessionYear":2020,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-23","recordCreationDate":"2020-09-29","availableToBook":false}}
