He is sitting in the lotus position, soles of the feet upwards, with hands in the gesture of meditation and a facial expression of deep concentration. His throne is in the form of an open lotus flower, the upper row of petals pointing upwards towards Amitabha. His five-peaked crown encircles hair arranged in rows of tight curls, rising to a large protrusion or ushnisha, a sign of wisdom and enlightenment. He wears floral ear jewellery. \r\n\r\nAmitabha came to the V & A as one of a pair of figures, slightly under life-size. His companion figure is a lotus-bearing deity, probably the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara.","physicalDescription":"Figure of Amitabha seated on a lotus throne, the hands folded in the lap, palms upwards","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Buddhism","id":"THES48984"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2009BY6819"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"B","id":"THES396673"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"figure","id":"AAT189808"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"17th century","earliest":"1600-01-01","latest":"1700-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"92.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"From the Sir Ratan Tata Collection","briefDescription":"Figure of a Buddhist divinity seated on a lotus throne","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"阿彌陀佛","id":"CIT281411"},{"text":"禪定印","id":"CIT286349"},{"text":"吉祥坐","id":"CIT0283709"},{"text":"冠","id":"CIT281574"},{"text":"頭飾","id":"CIT288158"},{"text":"耳飾","id":"CIT285611"},{"text":"白毫","id":"CIT0288631"},{"text":"袍","id":"CIT289580"},{"text":"腰巾","id":"CIT0292296"},{"text":"鐲","id":"CIT285619"},{"text":"蓮座","id":"CIT281341"},{"text":"紋飾","id":"CIT284561"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Amituofu\r\nAbout 1650\r\nQing dynasty\r\nChina\r\nBronze\r\nAmituofu (known in Sanskrit as Amitabha) is the\r\nBuddha who promises salvation to all believers.
