In 1945 Ascher commissioned a number of  leading modern British painters, sculptors, graphic artists and theatrical designers who would incorporate all the verve and vitality of the modern art scene in designs for headscarves.  The brief was relatively simple, contributors were asked to produce designs, in any medium colour or size, for a 90 centimetre silk or rayon square.  Artists could choose their own subject matter; it was left to Ascher to choose the design which best typified each individual style. \r\n\r\nThe family group and mother and child, which had captured Moore's imagination since his early visits to the British Museum reflect his own personal experience of maternal devotion but also became evocative symbols of the ideal domestic relationship, providing a sense of community, parental unity and stability after the dark days of the war.  This sense of the innate ability of humanity to survive even the most atrocious of events would continue to influence Moore's work and would prove enormously popular with both the popular and specialist press.","physicalDescription":"Scarf of screen printed brown rayon with images of family groups.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Moore, Henry Spencer","id":"A15239"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Ascher Limited","id":"A13990"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"rayon","id":"AAT14059"}],"techniques":[{"text":"screen printed","id":"AAT53281"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Screen printed rayon","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006BF0612","2019LN3576","2019LN3577"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"009","id":"THES307826"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Head scarf","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1949","earliest":"1944-01-01","latest":"1953-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Miss Elizabeth Aslin","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"91","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"92.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Head scarf, Henry Moore, Ascher, London, ca. 1949.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Limited edition","id":"THES48862"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.163-1978"],"accessionNumberNum":"163","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1978,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-09","recordCreationDate":"2008-05-02","availableToBook":true}}
