In the example illustrated here he exploits the rich pictorial potential of the different colours, shapes and textures of the locally-produced objects on display. The seated shop-keeper, surrounded by his wares, provides a focal point for the composition. Like his compatriot, Richard Parkes Bonington, Wyld received lessons in watercolour from Louis Francia; all three can be described as Angle-French artists, their careers divided between the two countries. Wyld was also influenced by the Orientalist artist Horace Vernet, whom he met in Algeria and to whom he dedicated his series of lithographs, Voyage pittoresque dans la Régence d'Alger exécuté en 1833, published in collaboration with Emile Lessore in Paris in 1835. The watercolour shown here is reproduced as one of these lithographs, entitled Marchand de la Rue de Chartres","physicalDescription":"Watercolour drawing","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Wyld, William (RI)","id":"A22053"},"association":{"text":"painter","id":"x36959"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour drawing","id":"x37878"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour with touches of bodycolour, and with gum","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"}],"styles":[{"text":"British School","id":"x30967"},{"text":"Orientalism","id":"x31272"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2008BV6270"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"125C","id":"THES49896"},"free":"","case":"CA3","shelf":"","box":"16"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Algeria","id":"x30025"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1833","earliest":"1833-01-01","latest":"1833-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, Art Fund, Shell International and the Friends of the V&A","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"26.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"19.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Signed W.
