Produced in 1940, when resources in Britain were very stretched due to the Second World War; for this reason the posters for productions would have been very austere. \r\n\r\nThe Arts Theatre Club was opened in 1927 for the production of plays unlicensed by the Lord Chamberlain's Office, censors of the British stage until 1968. By invoking a fee for membership to the club, the theatre could perform controversial works without fear of being prosecuted.","physicalDescription":"Yellow poster with black typography advertising the London Ballet at the Arts Theatre Club, with reviews from several newspapers.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"letterpress printing","id":"AAT178926"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Letterpress on paper","categories":[{"text":"Advertising","id":"THES49001"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"},{"text":"Dance","id":"THES252984"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2009BY0345"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES345120"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"posters","id":"AAT27221"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1940","earliest":"1940-01-01","latest":"1940-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"76","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"50.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"ARTS THEATRE / \r\nCLUB / By LEICESTER SQUARE TUBE","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"THE LONDON BALLET: / \"PRETTY IN THE EXTREME\" Times / \"VERY CHARMING\" Observer / \"REAL QUALITY\" Sunday Times / \"VERY ATTRACTIVE\" Daily Mail / \"ORIGINAL\" News-Chronicle","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"8.30 (EX.
