Headwear was an significant part of dress in the 17th century, for reasons of both fashion and warmth, and although night caps were only worn around the home, they could be, like this example, very luxurious. Its rich decoration includes metal spangles (the 17th century term for sequins), silver thread embroidery and silver-gilt bobbin lace which would have reflected the light of candles and fire-places.\r\n\r\nThe cap's pattern of flowers, strawberries, and leaves is typical of the early 17th century. Many embroidery designs were inspired by the botanical picture books popular at the time. By the 1620s patterns specifically for embroidery were being published, often with their designs specially adapted for the shape of the cap.","physicalDescription":"A man's cap with floral designs.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"linen (material)","id":"AAT14069"},{"text":"metal thread","id":"x30421"},{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"},{"text":"lace","id":"AAT132861"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Linen, embroidered with silver-gilt, silver and silk thread, trimmed with silver-gilt bobbin lace","categories":[{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"},{"text":"Nightwear","id":"THES48918"},{"text":"Hats and headwear","id":"THES48943"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AC7161","2011EY9788","2011FD8663","2013GC9782","2017JV2681","2017KC3228"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES404959"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Cap (headgear)","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1600-1624","earliest":"1600-01-01","latest":"1624-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"23.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"converted from department file"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"28.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"converted from department file"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Man's cap of embroidered linen, 1600-1624, English; Coloured silks, silver-gilt and silver thread","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"John Lea Nevinson, Catalogue of English Domestic Embroidery of the Sixteenth & Seventeenth Centuries, Victoria and Albert Museum, Department of Textiles, London: HMSO, 1938, p.85, plate LXIV a 2"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"Flowers","id":"x31099"},{"text":"floral patterns","id":"AAT10135"},{"text":"leaf","id":"AAT11892"},{"text":"strawberry","id":"x33276"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Man's nightcap.
