He was seated on his own legs on a low divan; on his right was another, about as high as a sofa, where we were directed to sit. On one side of the divan stood nine pages richly dressed, and on the other, opposite the Prince, a number of military and other officers, the physician, our dragoman, his son, and a few others sitting in the Eastern style on the floor ... ',\r\nThis encounter is illustrated by his son, Albert, then only eighteen years old, in this colourful and charmingly naive watercolour. Albert had accompanied his father to this meeting in June 1823, during a proposed expedition to Palestine, when, prevented by plague from reaching Jerusalem, they had remained some months in Lebanon, visiting the indomitable Lady Hester Stanhope as well as the awesome Amir.","physicalDescription":"On the back, pencil studies of Lebanese head-dresses","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Way, Albert (FSA)","id":"A22024"},"association":{"text":"painter","id":"x36959"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Water- and bodycolour, with gum, on stiff paper","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"}],"styles":[{"text":"British School","id":"x30967"},{"text":"Orientalism","id":"x31272"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2008BV6622"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"SCX","shelf":"8","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Lebanon","id":"x28966"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1823","earliest":"1823-01-01","latest":"1823-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, Art Fund, Shell International and the Friends of the V&A","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"10.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"13.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Inscribed with title and at Serayat Bteddin (house of the Law) near Der el Kammar. and date June 14. 1823. 7.
