She appropriated the traditionally masculine fabrcs for modern, streamlined, straightforward dresses for women. This narrow but unbelted design creates a loose ‘sack’ silhouette. The ‘sack’ was radical when introduced by renowned couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga in the late-1950s because it completely eliminated the waist at a time when Christian Dior's hourglass-shaped ‘New Look’ remained dominant in fashion. Mary Quant’s ‘sack’ dress would have been a cutting-edge design in 1959 and is the forerunner of the looser fitting, streamlined jersey dresses which she became synonymous with in the later 1960s. She regularly featured in major fashion magazines and commercial advertising modelling Mary Quant in the late 1950s and early 1960s and twice featured on the cover of Tatler and Bystander magazine wearing Mary Quant ensembles. In 1962 she married fashion and commercial photographer Colin Sherborne, wearing a Mary Quant dark green, bouclé wool dress for the occasion. The couple lived near to the Bazaar boutique, at the Pheasantry Club, 152 King’s Road, where Colin Sherborne also set up his photographic studio.
