This drawing is from a group of nine drawings of mosques in Istanbul and Bursa. The sketches are unusual for their time, as they have very accurate detail and perspective, yet appear rather ethereal. Another unusual feature is that there is a row of neatly spaced pin-holes along the edges of the drawing, as if the paper was gripped and located in some kind of holder. The speculation is that they were done with the newly invented patent graphic telescope, or a similar drawing aid, perhaps a camera lucida, a device based on a lens system and viewer for tracing a faint outline from nature. \r\n\r\nThe drawings were made by Lewis Vulliamy, a British architect who had been articled to Sir Robert Smirke. Vulliamy had been awarded the Royal Academy's travelling studentship in 1818, and he went abroad for four years, mainly to Italy, also to Greece and Turkey. On his return he set up an architectural practice, working in a variety of historical revival styles; his pupils included Owen Jones. Vulliamy became a conventional architect, who built houses and villas in the current restrained classical manner, and there is no evidence that he incorporated any Islamic ideas into his work. Nevertheless, unconventionally, he did draw this delicate series of mosques, including lesser-known ones, and he seems to have used the latest scientific instrument in order to do so. It is very possible that his pupil Owen Jones heard about Islamic architecture from his master, and about a scientific way of proto-photographic recording of design, with profound consequences for British design later in the century.","physicalDescription":"Drawing","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Vulliamy, Lewis","id":"A21909"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil on paper","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"}],"styles":[{"text":"British School","id":"x30967"},{"text":"Orientalism","id":"x31272"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2008BV6269"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"SCX","shelf":"5","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":"AAT33973"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Turkey","id":"x29225"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1818","earliest":"1813-01-01","latest":"1822-12-31"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, Art Fund, Shell International and the Friends of the V&A","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"26.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"42","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Inscribed Back Railing; and in a modern hand [incorrectly] on the back Mosque Suliman Istanbul","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"J GREEN 1813","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"paper watermarked"}],"objectHistory":"According to Rodney Searight: - `Bt fr Yvonne ffrench, March 1974, the lot, £70 [SD.1158-SD.1166] (see Christie's catalogue, March 5th 1974)'.","historicalContext":"The mosque was built by Sinan in 1544-8 for Sultan Süleyman.
