Balakjian was Freud’s printer from 1985 and worked closely with him on the production of his etchings.\n\nFreud started work on this etching in Tuscany, and brought the clod of earth with its weeds back to London with him, where he finished it. He may have been inspired by Albrecht Durer's watercolour Das grosse Rasenstuck (The Great Piece of Turf) (1503, Albertina, Vienna); a reproduction of this picture had hung on the wall of his family's apartment in Berlin so it was familiar to him. The plate was bitten and first proofed on 19 April 1993. There are minir foul biting marks across the plate.
