Balakjian was Freud’s printer from 1985 and worked closely with him on the production of his etchings.\n\nThis print, a view of Freud's garden at 138 Kensington Church Street, London, was made over two summers. He failed to finish work on the plate in the first season and chose to wait until the following summer to complete it. The plate was bitten, and the first proofs taken by Paul Dewis at London Print Studio; it was then reproofed and printed by Marc Balakjian. Freud asked Balakjian to print the image dark, and he experimented with varying the tones across the plate to give a sense of depth and recession to the image. This process produced numerous variant trial proofs of which seven are now in the V&A.
