She has often cited the ideas of Duchamp as a revelatory influence on her thinking and her development as an artist, though she chose to work in a traditional medium. Her prints embody a philosophy of creativity which takes equally from east and west, traditional and contemporary. She considers her work to be conceptual, using traditional Japanese imagery as a means of expressing her message and philosophy. Shiomi often makes reference to masterpieces from the Japanese ukiyo-e tradition in her own work. Her woodcut printing technique is based on the traditional Japanese way of printing with water-based colours, but she experiments, constantly, often utilising new materials and tools. \r\n\r\nShiomi’s work is a unique mix of wood block printing for the colour with intaglio for the black areas – the lines of the boards, the shading and delineation of the ‘woodgrain’ (she uses smooth birch ply for her blocks), and for the outlines of the objects. Last year the V&A acquired the complete set of Shiomi’s woodcut prints ‘One Hundred Views of Mitate’ 1996-2016. These four blocks are for ‘Mitate No.60 – Yoshino Cherry Mountains’, 2002, were given by the artist to complement the prints, and to illuminate Shiomi’s printing process.\r\n","physicalDescription":"Woodblock with shapes cut out, coated in waterbased paint.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Shiomi, Nana","id":"A15369"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"birchwood","id":"x37631"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"woodcut","id":"AAT53296"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Birch ply with traces of waterbased paint.","categories":[{"text":"Printmaking techniques","id":"THES252987"},{"text":"Tools & Equipment","id":"THES48883"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2024NT2296"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"EDUC","shelf":"9","box":"K"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":"AAT41273"}],[{"text":"woodblock","id":"x35493"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2002","earliest":"2002-01-01","latest":"2002-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Nana Shiomi","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"34","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"34","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Mitate No. 60 Yoshino / 1.
