Alphonse Fouquet (1828-1911) was inspired the Renaissance, producing jewellery that often featured fantastical animals such as chimeras and dragons and set with a variety of gems including onyx, turquoise, diamonds and pearls.\r\n\r\nIn 1895, the firm passed to his son, Georges Fouquet (1862-1957) who had begun working for the company in 1880. His early work followed the style of Art Nouveau, notably collaborating with the artist Alphonse Mucha to create whimsical jewellery inspired by flowers and insects. Mucha also designed the Fouquet shop in the Rue Royale, open from 1901 to 1922, and now preserved in the Musée Carnavalet in Paris. Georges’ later work combined geometric forms with a bold use of semi-precious materials. He exhibited at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes which popularised the style later known as Art Deco.\r\n\r\nGeorges’ son Jean (1899-1961) joined the family business and showcased his own pieces alongside his father’s for the first time at the 1925 fair. Simplicity and clear geometric shapes, enhanced by materials chosen for their colours and textures, are central to his designs. Luminous colours in contrasting combinations were favoured. 'Jewels', he declared, 'must be composed of forms legible from a distance, the miniature is detestable'.\r\n\r\nThe business shut down in 1936 as it struggled to survive in the wake of the 1929 financial crash. However, Jean continued to produce jewellery independently for private clients. His work and that of his father were displayed in 1961 at the International Exhibition of Modern Jewellery 1890 to 1961 organised by the V&A and the Goldsmiths’ Company. A retrospective exhibition in 1984 held at the Musee Arts Decoratifs in Paris cemented the firm’s reputation and its legacy endures today.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Bracelet, gold with malachite and black lacquer, designed and made by Jean Fouquet, Paris, about 1929.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.118-2007"],"accessionNumberNum":"118","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":2007,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"Previous loan number","id":"THES50326"},"number":"LOAN:AMERICANFRIENDS127.-2003"},{"type":{"text":"Goldstein Collection number","id":"THES54597"},"number":"83"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-06-03","recordCreationDate":"2008-04-21","availableToBook":false}}
