Traditional Orkney chairs were traditionally made using local resources such as driftwood or timber from shipwrecks as the Scottish island does not have an abundance of trees.\n\nKevin Gauld was born in Orkney and comes from a family of furniture-makers and boat-builders and grows his own oat straw to weave the straw backs. Gareth Neal is a London-based furniture designer whose work harmoniously unites traditional and digital techniques to create uniquely crafted pieces.\n\nThe Brodgar chair takes its name from the Brodgar stones, a Neolithic stone circle on the largest of Orkney's islands; the curved back of the chair echoes the lines of the stone circle.","physicalDescription":"A wooden chair with a drawer underneath the seat and a woven straw back.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Gareth Neal","id":"AUTH326877"},"association":{"text":"Designer","id":"x34662"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Kevin Gauld","id":"AUTH357197"},"association":{"text":"Weaver","id":"AAT25367"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"oak","id":"AAT12264"},{"text":"straw","id":"AAT11908"}],"techniques":[{"text":"weaving","id":"AAT53642"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Oak and oat straw","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Interiors","id":"THES48933"},{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2020ML4024","2020ML4025","2020ML4018","2020ML4019","2020ML4026","2020ML4017","2020ML4027","2020ML4020","2020ML4021","2020ML4028","2020ML5230","2020ML5229","2020MN6926"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"133","id":"THES49881"},"free":"","case":"BY3","shelf":"EXP","box":""},{"current":{"text":"133","id":"THES49881"},"free":"","case":"BY3","shelf":"EXP","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"chair","id":"AAT37772"}],[{"text":"drawer","id":"AAT40558"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Orkney","id":"x29753"},"association":{"text":"Weaving","id":"AAT53642"},"note":"The oat-straw back woven in Orkney by Kevin Gauld."},{"place":{"text":"Coventry","id":"x32527"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"The oak frame made in Coventry by Windsor chair specialists Sitting Firm."}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2019","earliest":"2019-01-01","latest":"2019-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"2012","earliest":"2012-01-01","latest":"2012-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":"First designed and manufactured in 2012"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"78","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"17/01/2020","earliest":"2020-01-17","latest":"2020-01-17"},"part":"Chair","note":"Taken from object, 17/01/2020, GW."},{"dimension":"Width","value":"68","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"17/01/2020","earliest":"2020-01-17","latest":"2020-01-17"},"part":"Chair","note":"Taken from object, 17/01/2020, GW."},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"57","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"17/01/2020","earliest":"2020-01-17","latest":"2020-01-17"},"part":"Chair","note":"Taken from object, 17/01/2020, GW."},{"dimension":"Height","value":"6.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"17/01/2020","earliest":"2020-01-17","latest":"2020-01-17"},"part":"Drawer","note":"Taken from object, 17/01/2020, GW."},{"dimension":"Width","value":"28.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"17/01/2020","earliest":"2020-01-17","latest":"2020-01-17"},"part":"Drawer","note":"Taken from object, 17/01/2020, GW."},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"29.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"17/01/2020","earliest":"2020-01-17","latest":"2020-01-17"},"part":"Drawer","note":"Taken from object, 17/01/2020, GW."}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Brodgar Occasional Chair', Orkney-style chair, designed by Gareth Neal and made by Gareth Neal, Kevin Gauld (wove the oat-straw back) and Sitting Firm (made the oak frame), Orkney (weaving), Coventry (frame), 2019.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"small batch","id":"THES252237"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"chairs","id":"AAT37772"},{"text":"straw work","id":"AAT44071"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"'Brodgar Chair'\n2012\nGareth Neal (born 1974) and Kevin Gauld (born 1980)\n\r\nFrame made in Coventry, seat woven and chair finished in Kirkwall, Orkney \r\nMade 2019\r\nFrame and seat: oak \r\nBack: oat straw sewn with bentgrass\n\r\nMuseum no.
