She moved to New York in 1970 and set up her own workshop.\r\n\nHer work in the early 1960s is characterised by her interest in 'unit construction' - making works from small, repeated elements, a technique which replicates the organic development of nature. This led to the rejection of gemstones in favour of materials previously unused in jewellery such as components used in the electrical industry and perforated metal plates, supported by the firm of Johnson Matthey Metals. She described her approach in the catalogue accompanying her V&amp;A exhibition in 1984: 'There are many valid ways of proceeding in jewellery - stone-setting, casting, enamelling, to name a few. I rejected all of them, limiting myself to one method of approach, namely to <i>building with formal units of a consistent material</i>. This might seem to be an excessive limitation that could have impeded the long range development of my work. Not at all. There was never and has never been a time when I couldn't proceed any further. Every structure I have made, each little or bit step has led me to new ideas and in fact, this is the only way an artist has of knowing that he is on a correct path for himself'. \n\nThe hoop of this ring is made of a broad, polished silver band on which is set a deep oxidised silver bowl. Inside the bowl, a series of small metal washers have been arranged to create a hexagonal shape. It demonstrates many of the design principles which she explained in her book 'Jewellery and sculpture through unit construction' (1967). \n\n","physicalDescription":"Broad polished silver hoop, the bezel a concave circular form of oxidised silver in which are set a pattern of polished silver washers.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Meyerowitz, Patricia","id":"A21802"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28674"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Oxidised silver set with silver washers","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2007BM5637","2007BM5638"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91 (VA)","id":"THES49703"},"free":"","case":"43","shelf":"B","box":"16"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Ring","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"New York","id":"x29030"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1975","earliest":"1975-01-01","latest":"1975-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"3.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"3.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"3.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"A similar ring was shown in the 'Patricia Meyerowitz' exhibition held in the V&A Jewellery Gallery March-April, 1984","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Saucer' ring, oxidised silver set with silver washers.
