It was probably made for a member of the French nobility. \r\n\r\nThe technique, known as ronde bosse, was the most fashionable enamel technique of the day. It involved covering a three-dimensional or high-relief surface with enamel and was invented around 1370 in Paris, the greatest centre of medieval goldsmiths in Europe.","physicalDescription":"A figure of the Virgin and Child, gold, enamelled in the ronde bosse technique. The piece is hollow-backed, and the composition is a high relief. The Virgin is shown three-quarter length wearing a green dress with gold border and low neckline, and a white gold-bordered cloak lined with red. On her head is a gold crown. She holds the end of a gold staff in one hand and supports the feeding infant Christ with the other. He wears a loincloth with a pattern of red flowers and green leaves.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT14910"}],"techniques":[{"text":"enamelled","id":"x30139"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gold and ronde bosse enamel","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AC4766","2006AC4842","2017JW1653","2019LY7563","2022NG2169"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"CB010","id":"THES403891"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES412368"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES412368"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Pendant","id":""}],[{"text":"Frame (19th century)","id":""}],[{"text":"Paper","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1400","earliest":"1395-01-01","latest":"1404-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"5.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Gold pendant of the Virgin and Child with ronde bosse enamel, France, about 1400","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Marian Campbell, Medieval Enamels (London 1983), p.7"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Ronald, W.
