It is made from piña silk, a fine fabric woven from a blend of pineapple fibre and silk, and decorated with whitework embroidery known as calado. This technique involves carefully drawing together individual threads to create delicate openwork patterns. Such embroidery is traditionally handcrafted by highly skilled embroiderers in Lumban, Laguna Province, south of Manila.\n\nThe barong was popularised as national formal wear by President Ramon Magsaysay (1907–1957), who wore it for his inauguration and other state occasions. This example was worn by the young donor at diplomatic galas with his wife, Stacy Danika Garcia, who serves as Third Secretary and Vice Consul at the Embassy of the Philippines in London, as well as at other formal events, including celebrations marking Philippine National Day.\r\n\r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"This man's shirt, known as barong tagalog or barong, is made of plain weave piña silk, using piña (pineapple fibre) as the warp threads and silk as the weft wefts. It has a stiffened turn down collar, buttoned up on central front, long sleeves with cuffs, and lined with white polyester organza. Size: L. \r\n\r\nIt is fully embellished with hand embroidery of scrolls and leaf motifs arranged in stripes format extending from the front to the sleeves and across the back panel in the style of the 'Raya' design. 'Raya' is derived from the Spanish word meaning \"stripe.\" \n\nTwo types of whitework embroidery techniques are used: the \"embossed\" design (burda) is done in white cotton threads; while the drawn thread work (calado) is done by tying several threads in the weave to create the designs, the thread used to tie the \"calado\" is synthetic.
