A piece of textile is first stiffened and made into the shape of a cup. A layer of lacquer is then applied to the textile, another layer added when the first layer has dried, and several more layers added in the same manner. The finished product is so light-weighed that this technique is sometimes called 'bodiless lacquer'.","physicalDescription":"Crane and tree on red","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Sing Shu An","id":"A21764"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"textile","id":"x41581"}],"techniques":[{"text":"lacquered","id":"AAT53796"},{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Textile, lacquered and painted","categories":[{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2021MY1234"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES376741"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tray","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Fuzhou","id":"x32126"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1935","earliest":"1930-01-01","latest":"1939-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Pamela Marchant","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"22","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Sing Shu An ware Foochow' on base","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Wedding present given to two Scots, Lieut Tom Marchant and Robina Bookless, who got married in Chongqing, west China, in 1935.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Tray, lacquered and painted textile with crane and tree on red, by Sing Shu An, Fuzhou, ca. 1935","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"cranes (birds)","id":"x34973"},{"text":"trees","id":"AAT132410"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["FE.520-2007"],"accessionNumberNum":"520","accessionNumberPrefix":"FE","accessionYear":2007,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-09","recordCreationDate":"2008-04-08","availableToBook":true}}
