Barbadillo wrote a computer program that would enable him to rotate the U-shaped forms within a grid, to produce any number of different patterns.  The artist assigned the forms numerical values and used a series of rules to alter these values and to explore the relationship between the forms.  Barbadillo would then compare the different outcomes in a sequence to decide which one was visually the most effective, and should be developed further into a screenprint, as with this work, or into a painting.  By using the computer as a tool, Barbadillo was able to process much larger quantities of information than would otherwise have been possible.\r\n\r\nBarbadillo began undertaking computer research in 1968 at the Centro de Cálculo de la Universidad de Madrid.  This rational approach to the creative process can be seen as something of a backlash against Abstract Expressionism, a style that flourished in the 1950s, and which put great emphasis on subjective self expression, over and above an objective approach to form and composition.","physicalDescription":"Black and beige screenprint, depicting the symmetrical rotation of a u-shaped motif within a grid.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Barbadillo, Manuel","id":"A21761"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"mounting board","id":"AAT183686"}],"techniques":[{"text":"screenprint","id":"x36290"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Screenprint on board","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Computer Art","id":"THES49037"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2008BT4871"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"CAS","shelf":"6","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Spain","id":"x29170"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1972","earliest":"1972-01-01","latest":"1972-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the Computer Arts Society, supported by System Simulation Ltd, London","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"59","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"43.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'47/50'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Edition number in pencil in lower left side."},{"content":"'Barbadillo'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Artist's signature in pencil in lower right side."}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Screenprint on paper, mounted on board, 'Sin Titulo' (Untitled), 1972, by Manuel Barbadillo.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"Geometric abstraction","id":"x35363"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.99-2008"],"accessionNumberNum":"99","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2008,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"Previous owner's number","id":"THES57329"},"number":"CAS/A/0090"}],"copyNumber":"47 of 50","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-18","recordCreationDate":"2008-04-07","availableToBook":false}}
