A piece of textile is first stiffened and made into the shape of a bowl. A layer of lacquer is then applied to the textile, another layer added when the first layer has dried, and several more layers added in the same manner. The finished product is so light-weighed that this technique is sometimes called 'bodiless lacquer'.","physicalDescription":"Butterfly on black outside, inside red","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Ling Dai Mi & Co.","id":"A21760"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"lacquer","id":"AAT14916"}],"techniques":[{"text":"lacquering","id":"AAT53796"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Textile, lacquered and painted","categories":[{"text":"Food vessels & Tableware","id":"THES48952"},{"text":"Lacquerware","id":"THES49004"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2021MY1231"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES376741"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Bowl","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Fuzhou","id":"x32126"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1935","earliest":"1930-01-01","latest":"1939-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"FE.507-2007","id":"O155596"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"Given by Pamela Marchant","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"5.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"11.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Fuzhou Lin Da Mei' on base","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Wedding present given to two Scots, Lieut Tom Marchant and Robina Bookless, who got married in Chongqing, west China, in 1935.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Lacquered and painted textile bowl, butterfly on black outside, red inside, one of a pair by Ling Dai Mi & Co., Fuzhou, ca. 1935","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["FE.506-2007"],"accessionNumberNum":"506","accessionNumberPrefix":"FE","accessionYear":2007,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-07-17","recordCreationDate":"2008-04-07","availableToBook":true}}
