A piece of textile is first stiffened and made into the shape of a bowl. A layer of lacquer is then applied to the textile, another layer added when the first layer has dried, and several more layers added in the same manner. The finished product is so light-weighed that this technique is sometimes called 'bodiless lacquer'.","physicalDescription":"Red outside, black inside","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Ling Dai Mi & Co","id":"A21760"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"textile","id":"x41581"}],"techniques":[{"text":"lacquered","id":"AAT53796"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Textile, lacquered","categories":[{"text":"Food vessels & Tableware","id":"THES48952"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2021MY1218"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES376742"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Bowl","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Fuzhou","id":"x32126"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1935","earliest":"1930-01-01","latest":"1939-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Pamela Marchant","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"24.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Ling Dai Mi ware Foochow' on base","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Wedding present given to two Scots, Lieut Tom Marchant and Robina Bookless, who got married in Chongqing, west China, in 1935.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Bowl, lacquered textile, red outside, black inside, by Ling Dai Mi & Co, Fuzhou, ca. 1935","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["FE.518-2007"],"accessionNumberNum":"518","accessionNumberPrefix":"FE","accessionYear":2007,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-09","recordCreationDate":"2008-04-07","availableToBook":true}}
