Its construction is comparable to that of other forms of male garments dating to the middle of the nineteenth century, but the very light, transparent silk textile used for this functional design makes it extremely unusual, reminding us of the practical realities and the messy business of travel and attending public events in nineteenth century Britain and Europe.\r\n\r\nNewspaper advertisements such as a notice posted in the Hampshire Telegraph, 12 July 1856, headed ‘Goodwood Races’ advises ‘gentlemen’ to purchase ‘one of ORSMOND’S RACE or DUST COATS, made from the finest materials expressly for the purpose, weighing only Six Ounces’. The emphasis on the lightness of the garment indicates that such garments were an equivalent of the twentieth century ‘Pacamac’ to be carried when in transit and packed away in a bag when not in use.
