In March 1869 Simpson accompanied Captain Charles Warren on some  of his underground explorations of Jerusalem for the Palestine  Exploration Fund in order to send illustrations to the ILN: see  Autobiography, 1903, pp.210-4, and Illustrated London News 24 April 1869, pp.423?6.  In 1872 he held an exhibition, `Underground Jerusalem', at the Pall  Mall Gallery, of forty Jerusalem subjects; many were bought for  the Palestine Exploration Fund.  \r\nSee Warren and Wilson, The Recovery  of Jerusalem, 1871, and other PEF publications, which included  reproductions of his drawings.
