Hampson designed the first prototype of <i>Eagle</i>, which was used to spark the interest of publishers. \r\n\r\nFirst published in 1950, <i>Eagle</i> ushered in a boom in British adventure comics. Hampson as creator of Dan Dare, its lead strip, was instrumental in its success. His artwork is characterised by an attention to detail and he often worked from props and models for realism. He owed much to the colour strips of American weekend supplements retaining their visual impact and narrative style.\r\n\r\nAlthough Hampson’s career in comics was relatively short - he left <i>Eagle</i> in 1961 - he was particularly influential among comics artists. He was awarded the Yellow Kid award at the biannual Lucca comics convention in 1975 for best writer and illustrator of strip cartoons since the end of the Second World War. \r\n\r\nFollowing his departure from <i>Eagle</i>, Hampson became a freelance illustrator and illustrated eleven Ladybird books, including nursery rhymes, history books and the Peter and Jane series.
