The composition may be compared with an ivory relief once in the collection of Lady Portsmouth. These reliefs are probably versions of a series of sixteen plaques with scenes from Ovid's Metamorphoses, the original clay models for which were made by Jacob Cornelisz Cobært after Guglielmo della Porta, whose assistant he was. There is also a comparable ivory relief thought to be Italian, and to date from the first half of the seventeenth century, in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum in Braunschweig.","physicalDescription":"Ivory drum, carved with the representation of the destruction of the children of Niobe by Diana, who shoots at them from the clouds.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Porta, Guglielmo della","id":"A8749"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":"after"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carved","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved ivory with cast metal mounts on the upper and lower rims.","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2011FD9515","2011FD9516","2011FD9529","2011FD9531","2017KB4622","2017KB4632"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES395607"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Cylinder","id":""}],[{"text":"Drum","id":"x47831"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1600 - ca. 1650","earliest":"1595-01-01","latest":"1654-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"12","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"11.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bought for £48 from M.
