Although his depictions of rural labour and poverty are bleak, they have an elegiac quality, as by the mid-nineteenth century traditional peasant life was in retreat in an increasingly urban and industrial France. This etching shows three peasant women picking up the ears of corn missed by the harvesters, their age-old entitlement. Millet's painting of the same subject is in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris.","physicalDescription":"Etching of three women in a landscape stooping down to collect ears of corn","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Millet, Jean-François","id":"A2296"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"etching","id":"AAT53241"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Etching","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[{"text":"French","id":"AAT111188"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2015HN1150"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"IONIDES","shelf":"23","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"etching","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1855-1856","earliest":"1850-01-01","latest":"1859-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Constantine Alexander Ionides","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"19.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"25.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bequeathed by C.A.
