He subsequently studied at the École des Beax-Arts before moving to London and being accepted into the Fashion School at the Royal College of Art (RCA). This coat was designed in 1970 by Richard Cawley as part of his graduate collection for his master’s degree from the RCA. The coat is decorated with hand-painted designs inspired by the painted decoration in the Vatican Loggias (or Logge di Raffaello) in the Apostolic Palace. The hand-painting was carried out by Andrew Whittle, a fellow RCA student. \n\r\nUpon graduating, Cawley was hired as a designer at Bellville Sassoon, where he stayed for thirteen years. Whilst at Bellville Sassoon, Cawley and Whittle collaborated on several further garments including a coat for the 1970 Winter couture collection, also in the V&A's Textiles and Fashion Collection (T.26-2006). The coat is of cream wool twill with wide lapels, concealed button fastenings and a sash belt at the waist. The coat is decorated with hand-painted designs that were carried out by Andrew Whittle, a fellow RCA student. The illustrations were inspired by the painted decoration in the Vatican Loggias (or Logge di Raffaello) in the Apostolic Palace and created from sketches taken in situ by Cawley on a trip to Italy earlier that year. The delicate and detailed motifs are arranged in a symmetrical design, with plain painted strips along the edges of the opening and cuffs, reminiscent of the borders on the painted panels of the Loggias. The design on the back of the coat features both the creators’ initials, R. C. and A. W., highlighting the collaboration.\n\r\nThe end of year fashion show was covered by the local newspaper Kensington Post; fashion reporter Verona Whitty stated that ‘Richard’s plain colours and breath-taking simplicity of line were wonderfully set off by the hand-painted flying angels reminiscent of Botticelli’, adding that Whittle’s hand-painting on Cawley’s garments ‘drew loud applause’ (Veronica Whitty, ‘And there wasn’t a mini to be seen anywhere…!’, Kensington Post, 3 July 1070, p. 8). \n\r\nUpon graduating, Cawley was hired as a designer at Bellville Sassoon, where he stayed for thirteen years. Shortly after joining Sassoon, Cawley once again enlisted Andrew Whittle’s skills to collaborate on a coat for the 1970 Winter couture collection, this time inspired by Indian art and culture. The coat, named Rajputana, was of a minimal cut and simple silhouette but featured intricate and colourful hand-painted decoration applied by Whittle. The coat was acquired by the V&A in 2006 (T.26-2006). Cawley and Whittle collaborated on several other garments for Bellville Sassoon, one of which is now in the collection of the Walker Art Gallery.
